The Global Network Initiative (GNI) is seeking an Executive Director to lead a new multi-stakeholder organization dedicated to protecting and advancing the human rights of freedom of expression and privacy in the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector.

About the Global Network Initiative: The GNI was launched on October 29, 2008 when a diverse group of companies, human rights organizations, academics, investors, and technology leaders published new Principles on Freedom of Expression and Privacy, accompanied by Implementation Guidelines and a Governance, Accountability and Learning Framework.

Executive Director Position: The Executive Director will report to GNI’s Board of Directors and will be responsible for key tasks and milestones associated with the establishment and operation of the organization.

Key milestones include: globalizing and increasing GNI’s membership, developing a strategic plan in close consultation with the board, and making the GNI a leading voice in defending and promoting freedom of expression and privacy in the ICT sector.

View Article  Fellowship Opportunity: Yale Information Society Project Fellowships for 2009-2010
The Information Society Project (ISP) at Yale Law School is seeking applicants for 2009-2010 postdoctoral fellowships. The ISP resident fellowships are designed for recent graduates of law or Ph.D. programs who are interested in careers in teaching and public service in any of the following areas: law and innovation; Internet and telecommunications law and policy; intellectual property law; access to knowledge; first amendment law; media studies; privacy; civil liberties online; cybercrime and cybersecurity; social software; standards and technology policy; bioethics, biotechnology, and law and genomics; and law, technology, and culture generally.

View Article  Job Posting: Program Officers (2), Global Internet Freedom Program, Freedom House - Washington, DC
Freedom House is an independent non-governmental organization that supports the expansion of freedom in the world. Freedom House functions as a catalyst for freedom through its analysis, advocacy, and action. Freedom House seeks a Program Officer for its Global Internet Freedom program.

The Program officer will work with the Senior Program Officer on program implementation, program activities, maintaining regular contact with program partners, reporting on program progress and impact, and assessing conditions of Internet Freedom in restricted environments. The candidate will also be responsible for some financial aspects of the project. The Global Internet Freedom Program seeks to compile documentation on violations of Internet freedom, build a network of online activists to challenge Internet censorship, coordinate events and trainings, and to promote freedom of expression online.

The appropriate candidate should have knowledge and experience in grant writing, internet governance, freedom of expression and New Media, as well as strong research, writing, and problem-solving skills; strong written and oral English; foreign language skills such as Mandarin or Arabic highly desired. Must be detailed-oriented. Masters degree or equivalent plus 3-5 years experience required.
